Visit the visitor's center and view a film, see exhibits and a model of the South Fork dam, and information on the Johnstown flood of 1889. There are summer programs, an interpretive trail, and a restored house.

The incline is the steepest vehicular (capable of hauling cars) one in the country. It consists of 2 cable cars side by side which move in opposite directions (when 1 goes up the other goes down).

It was originally constructed after the Johnstown Flood when the city was rebuilt on higher ground to connect the town at the top to the central area of the city at the bottom.

Riders can get a view of the city at the top of the incline on the observation deck.

The monastery on the grounds is the former Charles Schwab estate. The Franciscans care for the gardens.

This is one of the most popular Pennsylvania tourist attractions in the county. Enjoy the gorgeous gardens filled with flowers over the summer months.

Be refreshed by the statues and the fountain in the center of the lawn. The gardens are very peaceful and a nice spiritual refuge.

There is a Lady of Fatima statue where you can light candles, Stations of the Cross, a St. Francis statue, Rock Gardens with a statue of St. Michael the Archangel, and a statue of St. Joseph with the baby Jesus.

Prince Gallitzin’s Chapel House

Private chapel of Father Demetrius Gallitzin who is currently being commissioned for canonization.

His tomb is located by the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.

Prince Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin was born in December 1770 in the Netherlands.

He arrived in the United States at the age of 22 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1795.

He requested that he become the pastor of a mountain area in western central Pennsylvania which he renamed Loretto, after an Italian city named Loreto, after being granted pastorship there.

He constructed a church and small house out of logs in the PA mountains where he served Catholics in a 100 mile area as the sole priest for over 20 years.

His writings include, "Defense of Catholic Principles", "A Letter on the Holy Scriptures" and "An Appeal to the Protestant Public". He died in May 1840.
